Happy Spring Equinox! * * Hope y'all got outdoors to celebrate with our beautiful mama Earth, and if you get the chance look up at the sky and say hello to the moon! * * Since Hadley was feeling better I thought some vitamin D would do us both some good. This mama trudged 4.5 miles through a slushy snowpack as Hadley happily chatted away, telling me stories of what she was seeing. The weather was near perfect with temps in the upper 30's, birds chirping, clear skies and no wind. It was one of those days when all of the right pieces came together just so, making it a perfectly feel good kind of day!
• “For most of history, man has had to fight nature to survive; in this century he is beginning to realize that, in order to survive, he must protect it.” -Jacques-Yves Cousteau • Others who have grown up (or spent any time as children) on beachfront communities know this all too well- from wisdom on avoiding raw sewage tides (don’t go surf after a rain storm, folks) to many a museum visit with one class or another, downstream effects of pollution and the broader implications of comprehensive conservation policies are simply new facts of life on our highly populated and still-wild-in-places blue planet. A major part of this modern balance (conundrum?) is finding ways to connect broader communities with individual conservation causes, and places like the SD Zoo, Safari Park, and Birch Aquarium manage to do this while simultaneously funding scientific and ecological research projects (both in the lab and in the field). • Now, I know certain Netflix documentaries on whales and other sea mammals has more recently given aquariums a bad name, but I want to make an effort to praise the good, research-focused, science-heavy institutions that do exist. San Diego boasts the @birchaquarium and @sandiegozoologicalsociety among many other smaller rescue and research groups. I highly recommend the @montereybayaquarium for those further North along the coast of California. • The Birch Aquarium is backed by research from the @scripps_ocean institute and has never failed to delight me (as a lifetime patron I hope that experience from 6 years old to 28 means something!). This place never gets old because conservation-driven content and outreach will always inspire. That and all this background really enriches my outdoor opportunity’s and pursuits in the field . So here’s to well-researched and supported museums. More than mere conservators, they are stewards of passion, intellect, and curiosity. 🔬🌊🦈 • #conservation#generation • • • • • •
