Where better to find expertise in cannabis culture and cultivation than its mecca: Amsterdam. Jair Velleman is a seasoned industry pro, claiming some 30 years of experience and hailing from the Netherlands. In 2018, he took home the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cannabis Business Awards. In an interview after the ceremony, he said that when he got to the American cannabis system, everyone was growing in a very “specific” way and it was very “unprofessional.” Vellemen decided to apply his commercial growing knowledge developed on Holland to the American market, attempting to provide state-side growers with better cannabis with less lighting and lower cost. He did that by way of founding Gavita, the world’s largest specialized horticulture lighting company. Gavita serves retail, research and professional horticulture communities from single fixture projects to large-scale endeavors requiring over 100,000 fixtures. He later sold his portion of Gavita for millions and went on to pick up shares of Dabstars, one of the industry’s leading lifestyle and marketing brands. It claims to reach more than seven million viewers every week through its social media channels, posting content from around the world for an inside look at the fast-growing industry. @jair.velleman @dabstars2.0 #hcmagazine #100peopleyoushouldknow #hempbusiness #cannabisbusiness #cannabiscommunity #marijuana #cannabis #dabstars #gavita #dablife

Dr. Tyrell Towle earned a doctoral degree in medicinal and natural products chemistry from the University of Iowa in 2013. His graduation coincided with the legalization of adult-use cannabis in Colorado and his home state of Washington. Towle initially sought to improve extraction methods after hearing about the problems caused by open-blast butane extractions. His research led to an issued patent for the extraction of cannabinoids using ethyl acetate. Towle has also acted as scientific director of a Washington State certified cannabis analysis laboratory. Since 2017, Towle has led the extraction and chemistry team at MedPharm Holdings in Denver, Colorado. During his tenure at MedPharm Holdings, Towle has developed cannabis pre-processing, extraction, purification, and analytical methods. He also led the team that worked to implement Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ultimately received third-party certification of GMP compliance at the MedPharm Colorado facility. Towle has contributed blog posts to the National Hemp Association, is a member of the Cannabis Science and Policy Work Group in Colorado, and has volunteered in various capacities for the Cannabis Chemistry Subdivision of the American Chemical Society (Division of Chemical Health and Safety). Megan Solano graduated from Falcon High School in 2004 with a scholarship to Pikes Peak Community College for culinary arts. She pursued a career in baking for three years, and managed the Bruegger’s Bagels’ downtown Denver location. During this time her allergy to gluten was affecting her health, and she was using cannabis to help cope with the symptoms. Around this time, she decided to start a new career path in the cannabis industry. She switched her focus from managing bakeries to starting and managing Canna Botica, one of Denver’s longest running boutique dispensaries. The compassion she has to help make lives better through cannabis has driven her to push through the adversities of an increasingly regulated industry dominated by larger operators. Canna Botica has been in business for nine years, and Solano says it has been an amazing learning experience. Horticulture, compliance, and marketing are just a few of the skills she has cultivated along the way. Solano credits this knowledge, and her incredible staff, with making Canna Botica into a successful company. @cannaboticadenver #hcmagazine #100peopleyoushouldknow #cannabis #cannabisbusiness #cannabiscommunity #marijuana #coloradocannabis #cannabotica

A native of Colorado Springs, Hemp Depot CEO and co-founder Andy Rodosevich had two passions as a boy: cars and creating ways to make money. Today, with his high school friend Luke Pickering, he runs one of the nation’s largest hemp farms specializing in seed genetics, planting, harvesting, wholesaling and retailing cannabis for CBD with emphasis on safety and purity. Hemp Depot was one of the first 13 producers to be certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority, an organization formed in 2018 to self-regulate the industry with standards to ensure the quality and safety of CBD products. Rodosevich worked his way through college as district manager for a cell phone company, and upon graduating helped turn around a struggling car dealership as the company’s general manager. Realizing the potential of Colorado’s then-fledgling marijuana industry, he maxed-out one of his credit cards to establish one of Denver’s first medical cannabis dispensaries, Elevated Medical, in 2009. Despite making numerous mistakes, including falling victim to an armed robbery and Colorado’s changing zone regulations, the dispensary was a financial success. He went on to create an online cannabis social network called WeedLife in 2014, providing educational information and connecting consumers, businesses, marketers, and writers who cover the industry. Overnight, it grew to tens of thousands of users and has continued to grow since. @hempdepot_ @hempdepotcolorado #hcmagazine #100peopleyoushouldknow #cannabis #cannabisbusiness #hempbusiness #hemp #hempfarmers #hemplife #hempcbd #cbd #hempdepot #weedlife #mmj #marijuana
Kelly Rippel has been interested in hemp since around the age of 13, when his father told him about hemp research he participated in during the1970s. As a result, Rippel’s passion for evidence-based policy, public health and environmentalism has driven him to seek out a better understanding about humanity’s historical relationship with cannabis. Rippel received a degree in public relations and sociology from Emporia State University, attended the National Cannabis Summit in 2015, CannaGrow Expo in 2016, and represented Kansans for Hemp at the NoCo Hemp Expo during 2017. After working with decision makers in the enactment of hemp legislation in the state, Rippel now serves as an appointed advisor to the Kansas Department of Agriculture. He helped create rules and regulations for the state’s industrial hemp research program and assists in selecting candidates for licensure. He spoke at the World Hemp Congress in Ljubljana, Slovenia along with representatives from numerous countries where they shared lessons and challenges towards establishing consistent hemp legislation across all nations. Kelly recently helped organize the Kansas Hemp Symposium with The Hemp Biz Conference and serves as president of the state’s industry non-profit, Planted Association of Kansas, supporting the reintroduction of regenerative commodities. In 2009, Dan Riffle was an assistant prosecutor in Vinton County, Ohio, just a year after earning his Juris Doctor from Capital University Law School. It was during his time as a prosecutor that Riffle developed his stance that non-violent cannabis users should not face jail time. Subsequently, he went on to be the director of federal policy for the Marijuana Policy Project for six years, a robust organization founded in 1995 that focuses on enacting humane marijuana laws. In 2014, Riffle left the MPP because he saw a grassroots industry being overtaken by big business agenda as well as hypocrisy within MPP itself, according to a 2019 Marijuana Moment article. He went on to be the communications director for former Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and legislative aide to former Rep. John Conyer (D-Mich.). As of early this year, he was hired on as senior legal counsel and policy advisor for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), the 29-year old Queens native who unseated 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley and has taken the nation by storm. While his current endeavors with Ocasio-Cortez aren’t cannabis-specific, his experience crafting marijuana policy is likely to come in good use as the national debate continues to come to a head. #hcmagazine #100peopleyoushouldknow #cannabispolicy #cannabispolitics #marijuanamoment #marijuana #cannabis #mpp

In 1996, 18-year-old Professor P left his home in Upstate New York and jumped into the scene in cannabis-friendly Oregon. After working legitimate jobs to pay for a grow setup, he found his natural inclination for growing from seed and was soon breeding his own strains. He witnessed firsthand the power of cannabis medicine, seeing the remarkable relief the plant offered one of his close friends, who suffered from epilepsy, and focused his efforts on breeding a strain that would be the most efficacious for him. By the early 2000s, the Oregon medical marijuana scene was exploding, and Professor P ran into no shortage of elite genetics. Finding that some of these legendary strains would not breed as well as he hoped, he set off on a quest to collect as many seeds as possible, avoiding those he believed were detrimental to the stability and longevity of the gene pool. When a drunk driver left him without the ability to walk for several months, Professor P discovered an even deeper appreciation of medical cannabis and the dangers of pharmaceutical alternatives. The experience helped solidify his path, leading him to hone the medicinal qualities of his genetics with the help of patient feedback and found Dynasty Genetics. He’s since funneled that 20 years of experience into Relic Seeds, where he seeks to preserve his collection of landrace and heirloom strains for future generations. Professor P is also responsible for the breathtaking photography that defines the brand, which can be viewed on the company’s Instagram. @dynasty_genetics @professorp420 #100peopleyoushouldknow #hcmagazine #cannabiscommunity #cannabis #marijuana #cannabisbusiness #photography #cannabisphotography #photographer #dynastygenetics #professorp

Derrick Perkins grew up in Indiana, but started his career as a music producer in Los Angeles after being discovered by Stevie Wonder. After working as the associate producer on two Grammy-winning songs, Perkins transitioned into video production, working on soundtracks for the likes of Spike Lee and Disney, where he developed a passion for combining audio with visuals and soon landed a job at Stan Lee Media creating animated webisodes. His career eventually brought him to Denver, where he was hired to produce a TV pilot in 2008. He fell in love with the city, and soon found a niche for his talents in media production following the legalization of cannabis, with the flourishing commercial market placing a high demand on branded digital content. In 2014, Perkins founded DCP Media, which became the first production company to create TV and Radio commercials for CBD companies airing on mainstream outlets such as CNN, Fox News and CNBC, to name a few. In the four years since, Perkins and DC Media have continued to move cannabis into the mainstream, with several more ads approved for national TV and radio spots. Looking forward, Perkins hopes to continue normalizing cannabis culture by creating episodic content that is educational and informational, and potentially even shooting a feature film. In addition to that, he’s also applying his experience with drone videography to digital farming techniques, offering a host of services such as crop assessment to largescale cannabis producers. #hcmagazine #100peopleyoushouldknow #cannabis #cannabisbusiness #cannabiscommunity #marijuana #hemp #hempbusiness #mediaproduction #videoproduction #film #commercial
