Apis mellifera (L.), commonly referred to as the Honey Bee is one of the primary pollinators of America’s most popular cash crops and fruits. Unfortunately, the honey bee population is dwindling and it’s evident it’s preservation is needed! This colony was transferred from a vacant Katrina damaged double camel back. The colony should always be salvaged alive. Removing a honey bee comb from a cavity in an abandoned building is delicate procedure that should only be attempted by a professional with the right tools. #honeybeeremoval #removal #apismellifera #preservationofwildlife #preservationmatters #abandoned #vacant #sheetrock #bees #comb #brood #nectarflow #smoker #wax #colony #pollinators #beneficialinsects
Proper measures can be taken to secure the perimeter and entry points of vacant homes. This not only prevents deterioration of the property but also protects against vandalism and fire damage due to trespassing. Fortunately, there are some great heart pine floor joists underneath this disaster that can up upcycled into the rebuild. #burned #multiplex #renovation #reno #hgtv #firedamage #framing #beams #heartpine #unfortunate #newbuild #newconstruction #rebuild #vacant #blighted #removeblight
Securing a vacant home (temporarily) is one of the primary methods of fire, crime, and weather damage prevention. In the long run, the home needs be reused or renovated. Prior to the installation, hazard potential and remedy must be identified. In this case, the sheets are cut to fit to protect the trim and shutters against theft. * The HUD board up procedure uses plywood covers for window and door openings that are held in place using carriage bolts and 2 x 4 braces on the interior. #boardup #preservation #historicpreservation #preservationmatters #neworleans #preservation #shotgun #secure #prevent #fireprevention #crimeprevention #hud #hubboardup #homedepot #preserved #historic #lapboard #ventcap

Given New Orleans prime location along the banks of the Mississippi, the city has historically been built on alluvial deposits. Prior to the migration of Europeans, New Orleans was limited to local building materials such as sand, clay, oyster shells and wood (pine and cypress). The wood into framing, the clay into bricks, and the crushed and burned oyster shells into lime mortar/ limewash. Pictured: crushed oyster cinder block of warehouse on Tchoupitoulas. #history #lime #limemortar #limewash #clay #bricks #preservation #tchoupshop #mortar #masonry #mason #neworleans #cinderblock #tchoupitoulas #nola #brickwork #craftsmanship

Daily dose of blight: the vernacular typography of the shotgun house traces back to the 1809 Haitian migrant exodus from St. Domingue in the Caribbean. It is hypothesized the origin of the shotgun home is African and was greatly spread over the American South in the early 19th century. It wasn’t until the 1960s that preservationists and historians alike in New Orleans began to accept the Shotgun as a recognized and architecturally significant detail of the city scape! "The shotgun house of Port-au-Prince became, quite directly, the shotgun house of New Orleans."- John Michael Vlach- #nolablight #blightstat #blight #blighted #rotten #termites #waterdamage #siding #framing #overgrown #weeds #catsclaw #nolareno #nola #renovation #preserve #develop #preservation #preservationmatters #thisplacematters #prc #shotgun #double
Modeled after a renaissance palazzo, the Cotton Exchange building located at 231 Carondelet was built in 1871, one year after the New York Cotton exchange opened. The construction was financed by a organized group of cotton factors (brokers). The commission established a method of categorizing the quality of cotton and providing a solid platform between sellers and buyers. The exchange closed in 1964. Today, it is a hotel. Historic neighborhoods are becoming as popular as ever with the movement toward urban living. The garden district has limited space, so many owners have added ancillary buildings or employed other methods of added value per square inch. In this case, it appears as though this single family dwelling will demolished to make to make room for a larger home. #gardendistrict #neworleans #uptown #demo #demolition #uptgd #streetscape #newbuild #vacant #residential #brick #build
