Gotta love our backcountry huts!! Walked into Mackintosh Hut yesterday and met up with a fellow deer stalking beginner out there doing it. We shared a pot of coffee, discussed our plans and third hand information and went on our way with high hopes. Although still no animal hit the ground, it was an absolute ripper of a day, when you start to pick out a spot, navigate to it all the while following game trails and heaps of sign you start to find that you are in fact doing something right. Even better to spook a couple of animals and know you’re on the right track, unfortunately for me in that tight regenerating Manuka, in brand new country, the deer have the upper hand by a long way.
It’s been a minute. Gonna try be more active on here. We’ll see. I have A LOT of photos that haven’t seen the light of day. This is a 22 image panorama I took last week at the kaweka lakes in Hawkes bay. processed in autopanogiga. Shot on canon + sigma #photographer#landscape#sunset#newzealand#letstrythisagain
You’ve just had that moment you have been hoping for. You have stalked in on a deer and had the perfect opportunity to take a shot. You placed your shot perfectly and had been to the range so you know your firearm was shooting accurately. You are using a heavy enough grain of ammunition for the species you are targeting. But you get to where the animal was and it hasn’t fallen over straight away. ↟ Don’t give up. Look for blood. If you have a dog, great, but if you don’t, it’s up to you not to leave until you are 100 percent confident there isn’t a wounded or dead animal out there. ↟ This photo is from a hunt this roar. The shot on this stag was near on perfect chest shot. Adrenaline can help mammals do near on impossible things. There was no doubt about the accuracy of the shot, but the deer didn’t fall over and we didn’t find any blood. We did circles around where it had been standing and didn’t give up, finally, vibrant blood was spotted, a few droplets. It was incredibly difficult to track, there wasn’t a lot of it, it took a bit of perseverance. Finally the stag was found, between following small, widely spaced droplets and spotting a bit of antler sticking above a log. Once again, because of the native bush we were in, spotting the deer from a distance can be near on impossible, you can be right next to it and struggle to find it. ↟ I have been on a separate hunt where it was thought the shot was a miss, but we searched regardless to be absolutely sure, and actually it was a perfect shot and the deer had gone only a few metres, just out of sight before stopping. But on the flip side, I have also this year seen a three legged deer, it’s missing leg actually a somewhat healed mangled mess likely caused by a shot that went wrong. Neither @hashtag.dan or I could get a shot at said deer to cull it as it was on a ridge line. ↟ A part of this lifestyle which can be described as sustainable, ethical, and for conservation, is that the
This year, like every year, Molly came fly camping in the roar. This was her first hunt after getting her leg amputated, only days after getting her stitches out. The Vet said there was no reason Molly should miss out on all the action. The best thing we could have done for her recovery was take her for a hunt. It was the happiest we had seen her since the operation. Molly dog lives for the adventures.
Got to spend the weekend on a ballot block with three other good buggers. Chasing deer and pigs. Found the animals to late. And missed a gifted shot. It is hunting and not shooting. Came home without the meat but came home with good memories.
