If you visit our lab, you might see some colonies with white stuff on their boxes. This is fluon, which we apply to make the walls too slippery for the ants to climb. This means we can go in and feed the ants or take their waste without allowing them to escape. . . . . . #science #entomology #myrmecology #biology #ant #ants #museum #insect
Today we made a comprehensive catalog of all our live colonies! Every so often we have to go through our colonies to make sure everything is documented and consistent. This is really important for our research because it allows us to keep track of data associated with our colonies. That way, we know exactly what we’re studying! . . . . #museum #research #science #scientist #ants #ant #myrmecology
Yesterday the Adams lab participated in an outreach event across @mbdatosu We showed the kids that museums contain live collections, too, and the type of research we can do with those collections . . . . . #museum #naturalhistorymuseum #research #outreach #scicomm #ant #ants #biology
Lab outing today! We spent our morning on a nature walk because we had to enjoy the beautiful fall weather 🍁 πŸ‚ πŸ‚ πŸ‚ 🍁 . . . . #fall #nature #naturelovers #scientist #walk #woods #metropark
Update on our local carpenter ants! Three queens have started their colonies. We cover their tubes with aluminum foil because they’re more comfortable nesting in the dark. Their boxes let them roam around and forage. When the colonies are big we’ll move them into their final nest boxes where they can live in “underground” tunnels! . . . . . #science #entomology #myrmecology #biology #ant #ants #insect #insects #nest #museum
Happy Halloween! πŸŽƒ πŸ‘» We have our very own ~monsters~ in the lab (πŸ‘‰πŸ‘‰πŸ‘‰ for a video from @nepenthesbaphomet ). Parasitoid wasps lay their eggs in the larvae of other insects, including our ants. The parasitoid larvae eat their host and emerge as adults. Unlike parasites, parasitoids kill their hosts. . . . . . #science #entomology #myrmecology #biology #ant #ants #wasp #parasite #parasitoid #halloween #spooky #spookyseason
Congrats to Matt and Andrew for finishing their GRFP applications this week! Applying for the GRFP is a huge task, so it of course calls for cake! πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚ . . . . . #science #fellowship #nsf #gradschool #labmeeting #cake
Meet Rosa, our lab (or at least @rat.queeen ’s) pet! Is she an axolotl or an axolittle? You decide! . . . . #museum #lab #pet #axolotl #axolotlsofinstagram #herp #salamander
These girls are Sericomyrmex amabilis! Under a microscope these girls are super fuzzy and cute, and they curl up into a ball when threatened. . . . . #ants #ant #myrmecology #insects #entomology #science #biology #cute #friends
These are Megalomyrmex wallacei! Our two colonies were collected from Panama πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¦ this summer. This species is free-living, but other species are social parasites of fungus-growing ants . . . . . . . #ants #ant #insects #insect #myrmecology #entomology #science #biology
Meet Elaine @finchelaine our new ant feeder! We work together (Matt and @jaimeeatw0rld here) on our weekly big feeding day but Elaine is taking charge of ant care. . . . . . #ant #ants #myrmecology #insects #insect #entomology #science #museum
Cody @nepenthesbaphomet is just back from French Guiana πŸ‡¬πŸ‡« and already back to work! If you see him around ask about the ant course he took there 🐜 . . . . . #ant #ants #myrmecology #entomologist #gradschool #frenchguiana
This parasitoid wasp emerged from a local colony of carpenter ants that we collected! Our grad student Cody @nepenthesbaphomet is studying a different species of parasitoid wasps in our Trachymyrmex fungus growing ants. . . . . #science #ant #ants #insect #insects #entomology #myrmecology #wasp #parasite #research #museum
Hey everyone! Dr. Adams is giving a talk about our ants THIS SATURDAY at Defining Skin! It’ll be a great time so be there or be square! . . . . #antstagram #ant #ants #myrmecology #science #scicomm #tattoos #biology
Some colonies spotted by @nepenthesbaphomet Trachymyrmex cf. zeteki colonies make auricles at their nest entrances making their nests distinctive and easy to spot. You’ll see these along creek banks in Panama! . . . . . #antstagram #ant #ants #insect #insects #entomology #myrmecology #research #science #fieldwork #ecology #panama
These are new queens native to Ohio who are just starting their colonies. You can see that they’re tending to their brood. Like most queens, these girls are claustral, so they won’t eat from when they lay their eggs until their first workers hatch. . . . . . #antstagram #ant #ants #insect #insects #myrmecology #entomology #science #biology #museum #nofilter #queen
Catch our grad student Victoria (@rat.queeen) prepping for her experiments on venom alkaloids found in Megalomyrmex! She’s running experiments to test the antibacterial properties of these chemicals. . . . . . #ant #ants #antstagram #myrmecology #insects #insect #science #entomology #biology #microbiology #research #museum
Now that it’s summer you might see some ants with wings. Those are reproductive ants! That includes males (first photo) and unmated queens. Queens are always bigger than males of their species (πŸ‘‰πŸ‘‰πŸ‘‰). . . . . . #ants #ant #antstagram #myrmecology #insects #insect #entomology #science #biology #ecology #museum
