I’ll be honest and say it was a heckuva weekend and I’m off to a slow start this Monday morning. More coffee, please! ☕️ We are deep into a deck makeover project - which meant @calicameraguy AND I moved ALL the @smartpots off. 💨 AND the Santa Ana winds arrived right in the middle of it. Tune in tomorrow to “Beyond the Garden” on our YT channel for more! 👩🏻🌾 My inside stair rail is rocking the @smartpots wall saddle planters and keeping this little Yellow Banana Pepper from getting torn up in the wind. I have never been so grateful for how portable @smartpots are! 🌶 Grab a few of these space savers or any of their fabric containers at smartpots.com . Get 10% off with my code “calikim”. 💛 I think they look kinda cute inside, what do you think? 💮 No livestream today - taking a break. We’ll resume our normal schedule next Monday, 10/22 at noon, PT. . . .
@calicameraguy and I had a ball starting our fall seedlings in August. It makes growing vegetables affordable and adds TONS of extraordinary colors, shapes and varieties to the garden. 🌈 What’s your fav part of growing veggies from seed? . . . .

Ever wonder why your strawberries aren’t berry-ing? 🤷🏻♀️ I used to wonder the same thing until I learned a few tips. 🍓 Different types of berries produce different times of the year, -Ever Bearing - (smaller fruit-more often)2-3 crops/year, spring, summer, fall -June Bearing -(more fruit-less often) 1 crop in early spring/summer -Day Neutral - produce summer-fall Plant a mix of all three types to keep the berry’s coming. 😍 Ideal temps for strawberries to flower and fruit is 60-85 F, although the plants themselves will survive down to 20 F. ❤️ Most of our So Cal summer was over 90 F. I covered with shade cloth to help them beat the heat and keep producing. ☀️ What are you favorite strawberry tips? . . .

Spahgetti Squash - how to you like to eat it? 🍝 I had to harvest these a bit early, as the plant was killed off by the fuzzy caterpillars our garden is infested with at the moment. Usually the stem should be darker brown and slightly shriveled before harvesting. 🐛 Letting these cure on the counter for a few weeks before we’ll dig in! 💛 We like it plain and simple with just butter and parm, or topped with meatballs and marinara. Mmmm, mmmmm, mmmm - so much flavor! . . . .
Big basil harvest = pesto time! 🌿 Pesto is pretty simple around our house: -Basil -olive oil -garden fresh garlic -fresh parm cheese 🧀 Blend til smooth, adding more olive oil to for the consistency you like. 😍 Freeze in ice cube trays Pop in a freezer bag for storage and pull a few cubes out as needed for recipes. 💚 How do you like to use your basil? . . . .

If you think you can’t grow anything -try your hand at growing Microgreens. A new gardener friend helped me plant more seeds yesterday In fun “containers” we found around the house. 👩🏻🌾 Bring some whimsy to your windowsill - grow them in tea cups, jars, coffee mugs, and even shot glasses. ☕️ Because they are harvested at 2-3 in. tall, container drainage (or tons of light) is not a requirement . 💚 Want to grow your own tasty treats? Grab my new Microgreens Seed Collection at calikimgardenandhome.com (link in “microgreens” story highlight) 🌿 What do you have around your house that you could grow these tiny greens in? . . . . #indoorgarden

Looking for a basil that is super hardy, will take a light frost and keep on growing? Thai Basil is for you! 🌿 This plant is two years old and I’m always amazed at how hardy it is. Much more so than the traditional Genovese Basil. 💚 When it blooms, I cut it back, and it re-grows quickly. I’ve also grown Thai Basil as an edible bush in the front of my house. Can’t beat the combo of edible and beautiful! 🌳 It adds an anise like flavor to salads, and oriental dishes. My favorite way to use is is a Thai Peanut Chicken Cabbage Salad. So, so tasty! 🥜 Double tap if you are growing Thai Basil in your garden. How do you like to use it? . . . .
